Weeks 3-6: Contours, Form, Positive/Negative Space, Proportion, and Getting Abstract

After studying artwork by artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian for ideas, the Star Sketchers drew their own abstract compositions.  Scroll down to view everyone's drawings.

Shown clockwise, starting upper left, are drawings by Adriana, Nichole, Yazmeen, and Sara

The dragonfly drawing by Elizabeth (upper left) and Maribel's jaguar (upper right) show how students have been exploring accuracy in proportions and contour edges.

Students also learned about positive and negative space and drawing realistic form. Issac's study sketches of the egret (above) show how he used negative space to find the contour edges of its body.

Brianna continues her study of artists in history with her drawing of a Picasso still life, shown above. Also, be sure to check out Nichole's drawing, along with other student work, in eXpReSsiOn sEsSiOn: Click here

Ivonne
Your eye for accurate proportions keeps improving with each new drawing, especially the jaguar's body and the tiger's face. Nice abstract composition!

Alex
You've got a natural sense for drawing accurate proportions, Alex! Overall, the proportions and contour edges of the dragonfly are well drawn. Excellent use of lines and shapes for your abstract composition.

Elizabeth
The control of your line work and eye for proportions really came together in your drawing of the dragonfly. Powerful use of ink lines to create your abstract composition.

Sara
When you put your mind to it, you can pull together extraordinary compositions! Powerful line work and accurate proportions make for your unique drawing style. Keep it going!

Adriana
Your drawings are progressing wonderfully! I know the lesson about positive and negative space (the egret) was challenging, but you got into the Zone and pulled together some really nice study sketches of the bird. And your abstract composition is a powerful balance of lines and shapes.

Issac
Your study sketches of the egret are a great examples of searching for the negative space around the contour edge's of its body. Your final sketch shows accurate form of 's' turn in its neck. Control of your line work keeps improving with each drawing you make.

Maribel
Great work in drawing the accurate proportions of the jaguar's body! The patterns and gray tones for its fur are a nice touch. And the realistic contour edges that form the flower are awesome--a big step into drawing realistically!

Nichole
Amazing abstract composition! And your study sketch of the egret showing negative space is a strong step toward realism in your drawing.

Sonja
Really like the accurate proportions and contours of the dragonfly! And your study sketch showing the negative space around the egret's body is a great start in drawing realistically. Nice abstract composition!

Alysca
Nice use of lines and shapes to create a balanced abstract composition!  Your study sketch of the egret is a great start in drawing the negative space around its body. Hope you can complete it in the next class. :-)

Brianna
Beautiful still life composition!! Can't wait to see your abstract still life after Picasso!
